  559. Dizzy Gillespie- World Statesman (1956)
  560. >big band, bebop
  561. >Gillespie was one of the first to organize a big band to play in the bebop style. The tunes are fast paced, spirited and exciting and the soloists are especially good on this recording of the big band.
  562. Gabriel Alegria- Pucusana (2010)
  563. >Afro-Peruvian jazz
  564. >This sextet, led by Alegria blends the traditional rhythms and melodies of Peru, with other styles of Latin and Central America and with an improvisational language inspired by post-bop jazz.
  565. Archie Shepp and Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen- Looking at Bird (1980)
  566. >duet jazz, straight ahead, bebop.
  567. >The great avant-garde tenor player and the great bassist playing duet versions of Charlie Parker tunes. Shepp was known mostly as a free jazz player, but here he keeps things fairly structured, with moments of playing outside the form.
  568. http://www13.zippyshare.com/v/92321449/file.html
  569. >Multi-instrumentalist Wlodzimierz Nahorny begins and ends this record at the piano, for some fairly straightforward trio pieces along the lines of Bill Evans. He switches over to saxophone for the rest of the album for pieces that are very free and full of exciting and engaging enterplay between the trio. Volume 15 in the 'Polish Jazz' series.
  570. http://www13.zippyshare.com/v/29935113/file.html
  571. >After the unfortunate death of Esbjorn Svensson and the dissolving of the Esbjorn Svensson Trio, the bassist, Dan Berglund started this group. “Tonbruket” translates to “tone workshop” and the group explores the influences of classic progressive rock with unique instrumentation, influences of world music, and a spirit of improvisation.

  573. Billy Drummond- Dubai (1996)
  574. >post-bop
  575. >This is a quartet led by the great drummer Billy Drummond. A “chordless” ensemble, this is a good example of the sax battle setup, with Chris Potter and Walt Weiskopf both on saxes. As usual Chris Potter steals the show.
  576. Chico Hamilton Quintet featuring Buddy Collette (1955)
  577. >cool jazz, third stream, avant garde.
  578. >This is a live recording of the innovative quintet made up of woodwinds, cello, guitar, bass, and Hamilton on drums. The compositions are intricate and creative, blending jazz with classical counterpoint, Eastern modes, and free improvisation.
  579. http://www6.zippyshare.com/v/55076023/file.html
  580. >Later in his career pianist Eddie Palmieri would go on to be one of the best at mixing traditional Latin styles with jazz harmonies and improvisation but this early record stays very traditional in the Cuban tradition of dance music. There are several styles represented here—mambo, guajira, pachanga, and cha cha cha—it’s an early example of the music that would introduce the salsa craze of the 70’s.
  581. Balázs Elemer Group- Early Music (2007)
  582. >third stream, vocal jazz
  583. >This Hungarian group does a variety of vocal music, often with jazz influences. This recording takes its inspiration from Baroque and Renaissance compositions and puts a jazz spin on them. The arrangements are great, but it is the unique style of singing that really makes this album interesting.
  584. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5yhUkW1NJ_0&list=PLCEDF5F706042FFFF
  585. Orrin Evans- Liberation Blues (2014)
  586. >post-bop
  587. >This is a live recording from the new “Live at Smoke” series recorded at Smoke Jazz Club in NYC. Evans is one of the most unique and inventive pianists around and this release captures him with a fantastic band playing a number of Evans’ interesting original tunes, as well as several re-imagined standards. There is also a racially themed poem recitation which is accompanied by the band.
  588. Joe Henderson- Multiple (1973)
  589. >fusion, free jazz, avant-garde
  590. >This album was recorded as Joe Henderson was phasing out of his more free jazz phase, and into his more fusion phase and it captures the best of both worlds. Amazing adventurous solos, over psychedelic, electric grooves, sometimes with almost a spiritual quality to the music.
  591. The Duke plays Ellington (1953)
  592. >swing, piano trio
  593. >Duke Ellington is mostly remembered for his compositions and arrangements and work as a leader of one of the most successful big bands in jazz. He was also a talented and influential pianist as he shows on this recording of him playing his own tunes and standards in a trio setting.
  594. Dave Ballou- Amongst Ourselves (2001)
  595. >free jazz, post bop
  596. >Trumpet/sax/bass/drums gives this a somewhat similar sound to The Shape of Jazz to Come but with more variety in approach and more group interplay. Most of the tunes have some sort of structure, but this consistently gives way to all-out free improvisation.
  597. Chris Potter- The Sirens (2013)
  598. >third stream, ECM, post-bop.
  599. >A programmatic song-cycle based around Homer's Odyssey, written and led by virtuoso saxophonist Chris Potter also featuring Craig Taborn, David Virelles, and Eric Harland.
  600. The Dave Brubeck Trio featuring Cal Tjader (1949)
  601. >cool jazz, Latin jazz
  602. >A live recording of cool jazz pianist Dave Brubeck joined by multi-talented percussionist Cal Tjader for interesting versions of jazz standards.

  604. Opus 5- Progression (2014)
  605. >post-bop
  606. >This is the third release from this makeshift quintet, made up of guys who play together as sidemen on a regular basis. On this record the group plays mostly original material that is very modern, but there is obviously a lot of influence from the tradition of post-bop quintets, especially the classic Miles quintet.
  607. Gurdijieff- Piano Music played by Thomas De Hartmann (date unknown)
  608. >solo piano, vinyl rip
  609. >George Ivanovich Gurdjieff was a Russian author and spiritual leader, who also wrote music inspired by his beliefs. This is a vinyl rip of some of his compositions for solo piano, very much inspired by late Romantic composers, as well as early impressionsim.
  610. Dave Holland Quintet- Not For Nothin’ (2001)
  611. >post-fusion, post-bop
  612. >Possibly the best studio recording from the final lineup of Dave Holland’s working quintet. The group combines strong, groove-oriented compositions (often with changing or asymmetrical time signatures) with free leaning, and highly interactive improvisations. High energy, yet smart and entertaining playing all around.
  613. Kurt Rosenwinkel and OJM- Our Secret World (2010)
  614. >big band, progressive jazz
  615. >Guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel performs his original compositions with Portugal’s Orchestra de Jazz Matosinhos. The compositions are all ones that Rosenwinkel has previously recorded with small groups, but his skill at arranging these tunes for large ensemble really makes this album great.
  616. Marion Brown- Afternoon of a Georgia Faun (1970)
  617. >avant-garde, free jazz
  618. >Anybody familiar with the free jazz scene of the early 70’s will be familiar with most of these names. Each side of the album is an extended improvisation piece, with the musicians contributing to the texture and shape of music, rather than taking individual solos.
  619. Johnny Dyani- Song for Biko (1978)
  620. >post-bop, avant-garde jazz
  621. >Originally from South Africa, bassist Johnny Dyani relocated to Sweden in the 70’s where he continued to record interesting music with American jazz greats, as well as fellow expats from Africa. This record combines interesting compositions with adventurous solos.
  622. http://www76.zippyshare.com/v/39498722/file.html
  623. >Before his death, Ravel “recorded” a number of his piano compositions in piano rolls, which captured his timing and inflection on his pieces. Using “DUO-ART” technology, these rolls were performed and recorded using a Steinway player piano.
  624. Jeremy Pelt- Insight (2003)
  625. >post-bop
  626. >A great set of free-leaning post-bop from an extremely talented sextet. Each of the players contributes a unique sound to the improvisation, and the dynamic of the group as a whole really makes this record special. Recommended for fans of Miles’ second quintet, Herbie Hancock, John Coltrane, Wayne Shorter, etc.

  694. Alan Licht - Plays Well (2001) [V0]
  695. >Alan Licht is an American guitarist probably best known for his work with The Blue Humans, Plays Well juxtaposes two seemingly unrelated songs both clocking in at around 37 minutes, Remington Khan is loose improvised solo electric guitar noodling over a minimal two note loop '...that slides inexorably into a fuzzy noise fest', the playing here is reminiscent of Loren Connors and Jim O'Rourke, The Old Victrola opens suddenly with Licht playing along to an a cappella recording of Captain Beefheart '...which segues coolly into a sort of post-Velvet Underground punkish guitar melody', this continues noisily for a few minutes before cutting sharply to a loop of Donna Summer's Dim All The Lights, 'Licht superimposes layers of wailing guitars, gradually building the tension...until the original disco song explodes in all its glory at the 16-minute mark', he eventually plays his way back to a variation on the Beefheart motif that the track opened with, a sufficiently unique listening experience in what could have easily been a fairly typical electric guitar improv album, ~2k listeners

  702. Alan Silva and the Celestrial Communication Orchestra - Seasons (1971) [320]
  703. >avant-garde jazz, free jazz, experimental big band
  704. >For the purposes of this recording, extraordinary bassist and composer Alan Silva gathered dozens of the best and brightest jazz musicians of the day including Roscoe Mitchell, Joseph Jarman, Lester Bowie, Steve Lacy, Robin Kenyatta and many more to perform a single momentous and often meandering two hours long composition that stands as a masterwork of its genre, it is important to note that this is not always the sort of headache-inducing full on sonic assault flavor of free jazz, there are substantial 'spacey' passages that give the individual players plenty of room to comfortably coexist, these sections feel surprisingly orchestral and melodic when compared to modern jazz of this type, that being said the musicians are more than happy to let loose and lay down some blaring noise whenever appropriate

  710. >Amédé Ardoin was a highly influential musician that single-handedly laid the foundation for modern Creole and Cajun folk music, equally known for his fiery playing on the ten button accordion and for his high pitched singing voice, the music mostly consists of bluesy dance songs played in his trademark 'heavy rhythmic syncopated style', many of the tracks prominently feature Dennis McGee on the fiddle, this collection compiles all of his commercial recordings into one place making previously released compilations obsolete

  721. >microtonal, contemporary classical, three disc compilation
  722. >Bjorn Fongaard was a Norwegian composer guitarist and teacher recognized for his innovative work with microtonal and prepared guitar music, '...his specially designed 'micro-intervallic' guitar, fitted with twice the normal number of frets, it enabled him to subdivide every note in the normal scale again, accessing all the harmonic colours of the quarter tone', Fongaard makes considerable use of extended techniques including '...using bows felt and straws to prepare the strings, attaching tuning forks to the neck to ring in sympathy with certain notes, and playing it on a tabletop' the resulting music is texturally dense and slow moving, reminds me most of the musique concrète experiments of artists such as Luc Ferrari, this compilation is well sequenced and put together, this copy does not include the DVD, under 300 listeners

  966. >sound collage, noise, lounge
  967. >two sided sound collage album from our favorite noise punks, 'Original Hotel Ultra' is a hilarious mix of manipulated gay fetish porn audio featuring a disgruntled policeman and his suspect with cheesy lounge rock and miscellaneous sex grunts playing awkwardly ontop, 'Gay Hotel Ultra' opens by continuing the sex theme before being drowned out by various loud and distorted vintage samples and beats that eventually give way to piercing electronic squeals beneath rambling monologues, overall a very playful and interesting release that sounds nothing like some of their more famous releases

  973. The Ornette Coleman Double Quartet - Free Jazz (1961) [V0]
  974. >pioneering masterwork of the genre, as the title suggests this recording features two distinct all-star quartets improvising simultaneously for forty minutes, with one kept to the left channel and one to the right, Coleman (alto sax) Don Cherry (pocket trumpet) Scott LaFaro (bass) Billy Higgins (drums) on the left, and Eric Dolphy (bass clarinet) Freddie Hubbard (trumpet) Charlie Haden (bass) Ed Blackwell (drums) on the right, 'the rhythm sections all play at once anchoring the whole improvisation with a steady driving pulse' while the soloists trade off in an improvised dialogue, I find the playing on this record far more more impressive and enjoyable than on his more well known 'The Shape of Jazz to Come' album so I would recommend this even if you did not like that album, essential (free) jazz listening

  979. The Quintet - Jazz at Massey Hall (1956) [320]
  980. >celebrated live jazz performance featuring an extraordinary lineup of Dizzy Gillespie (trumpet) Charles Mingus (bass) Charlie Parker (alto sax) Bud Powell (piano) Max Roach (drums), 'at the time of this concert each musician on Jazz at Massey Hall was considered to be the principle instrumental innovator within the bebop movement', and as expected everyone's playing is spectacularly lively especially on the more upbeat tracks like 'Salt Peanuts' and 'Wee', unfortunately the sound quality is less than optimal since the equipment used to capture the performance was substandard, occasional faded audience reactions and snippets of crudely edited banter/introductions between songs can be heard, despite any shortcomings it remains an essential jazz document, the album was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1995 and is considered by some to be 'the greatest jazz concert ever'

  984. The Velvet Underground - Norman Dolph Acetate (1966) [320]
  985. >lo-fi experimental rock, art rock, noise rock, bootleg
  986. >recordings from The Velvet Underground's first studio session in April 1966, famously found at a yard sale for 75 cents, 'what the first Velvet Underground album would have sounded like had it not been rejected by the powers that be', the biggest differences are in the mixing and track listing, several of the lighter songs like Sunday Morning and There She Goes Again are absent entirely, the resulting product (which opens with a longer alternate mix of European Son) combined with the raw nature of the recordings makes this feel noticeably darker and rougher than the VU&N LP we all know, LOTS of surface vinyl noise, Heroin sounds very different, also sometimes referred to as 'Unripened'

  990. Toru Takemitsu - Coral Island / Water Music / Vocalism Ai (1969) [320]
  991. >contemporary classical music, tape music, musique concrète, vocal
  992. >'Coral Island' is a dynamic and lush piece for soprano voice and orchestra with clear influences from both folk music and the Japanese concept of ma, the vocalist in particular does an excellent job, the work becomes increasingly abstract towards the end which helps provide some context for the final two short tape compositions, 'Water Music' is comprised of loops of water droplets and other processed recordings of water related sounds, 'Vocalism Ai' is based around heavily distorted vocal samples of people repeating the word 'ai' (love), fairly unsettling and in my opinion the stronger of the two tape experiments

  994. Toru Takemitsu - In an Autumn Garden For Gagaku Orchestra (1983) [224]
  995. >'Gagaku is one of the oldest forms of Japanese Classical Music...It uses the pentatonic Yo scale and adopts an elegant sound that is typically solemn, slow-paced and resonant, Initially played with the gakuso and gakubiwa, Gagaku is usually performed by a medium-sized ensemble consisting of wind, string and percussion instruments, with the piercing flute sound of the hichiriki or the ryuteki playing the primary melody', Takemitsu's Japanese classical folk compositions are perhaps the best I have heard, in these pieces he manages to bring life to an ancient and stagnant genre, a good starting point for someone wanting to get into gagaku or other folk of this type, not to be confused with the compilation album of similar name

1055. >'Literally translating as 'elegant music', Yayue is a form of Chinese Classical Music, which incorporates elements of early Chinese Folk Music and religious traditions, Yayue was originally used as imperial court music, and went on to notably influence other East Asian traditional styles, such as Gagaku (from Japan) and Nhã Nh?c (from Vietnam). Yayue uses a variety of string, wind and percussion instruments, including the Guqin (a seven-stringed zither), the dizi (a transverse bamboo flute), the Bianqing (stone tablets hit with a mallet) and the sheng (a free reed mouth organ)', the music is lovely and incredibly soothing, essential Chinese folk listening, 1k listeners

1078. >Congaree Nomads takes as its basis 24 three-minute recordings Greg Stuart and I made in the park, along Cedar Creek and the Kingsnake, the Weston Lake and the River trails. It is a “nomadic” series that moves very gradually from the Creek to the Congaree River. Instrumental “fogs” (harmonies made by Pisaro and Stuart) overlay the field recordings. (GW 012)
1079. >Anabasis is a composition in 72 parts for five musicians, loosely based on four kinds of materials: Sand, Wind, Tone and Wave. The musicians featured on this recording (in addition to Pisaro and Stuart) will be Patrick Farmer, Joe Panzner and Toshiya Tsunoda. (GW 013)

1108. >Not to be confused with the famous R'n'B star of the same name, Bobby Brown became known to the public for his bizarre self built percussion set which he played with hands and feet creating a very unusual and peculiar rhythm carpet, not to mention his odd vocal style which added to his intriguing musical choice a touch of captivating madness. Although not electronic, his musical take will be particularly enjoyable for who listened to experimental musicians such as Silver Apples, United States Of America, Moondog and Fifty Foot Hose. This 1972 The Enlightening Beam Of Axonda is a supreme introduction to the bizarre world of Bobby Brown and the cover artwork confirms Brown's oddities.

  1266. >coldwave, sacred bones, lo-fi, synth pop, joy division-core
1267. >On Perfect View, Swedish producer Hannes Norrvide returns with his third full length and it’s warmer and more inviting than any of his previous work. The album is composed of largely instrumental pieces, focusing more on beats, samples and general ambiance than its predecessor, last year’s Growing Seeds. Tracks like “Breaking Silence” and “Barcelona” highlight this shift in direction and overall mood, while tracks such as “Another Day” and “Vibrant Brother” stay true to Norrvide’s signature form. Overall this album ventures more towards rave than no-wave and this is perhaps most evidenced by witnessing their live show where Norrvide is joined by Vår frontman Loke Rahbek.

  1270. Alan Licht - Four Years Older -- 2013, 320 kbps
1271. >solo electric guitar, editions mego, highly processed sound almost to the point of total abstraction, lots of pedals
1272. >A new set by the coolest chap in New York City documenting the before-and-after development of a solo electric guitar piece that Alan Licht has been playing out for last four years... 'Four Years Older' sees a move away from the loop-based pieces of recent releases. On 'Four Years Later' in particular the guitar's fingerboard is actually touched more than on any other solo piece of the last ten years, although the instrument is pushed to sound more like a suitcase synth, a church organ, a hornet's nest, and a malfunctioning PlayStation than a guitar per se. As Alan points out: “'Four Years Earlier' was the debut of the piece; it was in three sections, the latter two of which appear here. The first section was identical to the first section of 'Four Years Later'. I scrapped the second two parts after a couple of subsequent performances and developed it into a six-part piece, and then a seven part piece in this studio version.

  1278. Cindytalk - A Life Is Everywhere -- 2013, 320 kbps
1279. >A Life Is Everywhere' is an ecstatic mix of rhythm, noise, drone, texture and melody. Simultaneously heartfelt and not for the faint hearted. Within their self contained world Cindytalk continue the unique trajectory that has purveyed their career starting in 1982. Throughout the 6 tracks on offer the standard fair of music is run through serious level processes leaving, taking rhythm and sound to extreme limits whilst always retaining trace elements of their core. Ringing bells are interrupted by artefacts from shredded sound matter, euphoric chords are swamped by chopped rhythms which succumb to an endless storm of electronic bliss.

  1282. Daniel Menche - Marriage of Metals -- 2013, 320kbps
1283. > 'Marriage of Metals' is a devastating extension of the harmonic properties found in the instruments of Indonesia. Menche was granted access to a remarkable Gamelan studio where he was given full privilege to record any and all of these rare and ancient gongs. Most notably the gigantic “Gong Ageng” that’s contains the deepest of deep of acoustic bass. Daniel Menche took the raw source material from this Gamelan gong session and launches into a heavily processed yet surprisingly sympathetic 21st Century take on this unique instrument. 'Marriage of Metals' comprises two side long works where the purity of the sound source exists amongst the entire din. Metallic rhythms bounce alongside synthetic pops swaying from reality to fantasy, from pure acoustic tonality to fuzzed out distorted clatter. A distant feedback squall is teased amongst the foreground creating a clamorous din.

  1286. Heterotic - Love & Devotion -- 2013, 320 kbps
  1287. from the label:
1288. >Their debut release is a composite of four striking instrumental tracks and four unique collaborations with Gravenhurst, the musical pen-name of Nick Talbot who is known for his dark, folk tinged singer songwriting for Warp records.Love & Devotion displays a love of hazy, dreamy eighties influenced electronic pop shot through with the dynamics and space of modern electronic dance music. The result is an album of tightly coiled melodies cloaked in an insomniac haze, subtle harmonic shifts and strong vocal counter-melodies conveying sweeping sketches of a troubled, neon world.

  1297. Pharmakon - Abandon
  1298. from the label:
1299. >Margaret Chardiet was born and raised in New York City She has been making power electronics/death industrial music under the name Pharmakon for five years. As a founding member of the Red Light District collective in Far Rockaway, NY she has been a figurehead in the underground experimental scene since the age of seventeen. She points out that the environment there amongst so many other experimental artists (amongst them Yellow Tears & Haflings) inspired her to keep making increasingly challenging work. She describes her drive to make noise music as something akin to an exorcism where she is able to express, her “deep-seated need/drive/urge/possession to reach other people and make them FEEL something [specifically] in uncomfortable/confrontational ways.” Engineered by Sean Ragon of Cult of Youth at his self-built recording studio Heaven Street, Abandon is Pharmakon’s first proper studio album and also her first widely distributed release. Unlike other experimental projects, Pharmakon does not improvise when performing or recording. She is concise and exact; each song/movement is linear with a clear trajectory.

1305. Vår - No One Dances Quite Like My Brothers
1306. >Collab between members of Iceage, Sexdrome, and Lower
1307. >Vår is the project of four best friends from Copenhagen. Each member of the band is involved in several other Danish bands and all four members are also accomplished visual artists. What began as the extremely lo-fi two-piece of Elias Ronnenfelt and Loke Rahbek recording on 4-track has evolved into an experimental noise/industrial/techno pop quartet. On this album Vår utilize everything from acoustic guitar, power electronics, bass, trumpet, multi-tracked vocals, and various percussive instruments, to broken glass & sheet metal samples.

  1309. Quicksails - Mayville Dream
1310. >Ben Billington is a resident Chicago staple and multi-instrumentalist crucial to the Metro area experimental landscape... 'Mayville' is the sophmore LP following his 'Silver Balloons in Clusters' LP on Under the Spire. Being primarily trained as a drummer, various kinds of percussion appear throughout with many rhythmic angles that accent the intricate melodies and structures to make them truly unique. The opener 'The Many Roads to Mayville' opens with a concrete flutter before doing a complete 180 into a total color storm of melody and syncopated percussion. 'Institutes Innards' flips the mood right away with its deep urgency and melodies that demand introspect. Tracks like 'Bemus Has Wings to Fly' and and 'Closer to Tonawanda' display an ability to thickly layer pieces and parts to make a logical whole while displaying elements of early psychedelic rock and with the knowledge of early private sides in tow. 'Mayville Dream' has a special impact because you hear Billington stretch himself out over every playing style he knows and beyond to create something that's all his own.

1541. Ata Kak - Obaa Sima (ATFA remaster + slow version)
1542. This is actually an incredibly well-made album, often resembling very modern-sounding electro, house, even chillwave, all the while coming from a completely different musical background and displaying those influences too. Ata Kak ooze's enthusiasm you can't help but feel upbeat after listening to it. Than some how it being lo-fi boost's the production giving the album a nice even subdued sound. Followed up by a pre era rave bass thumping in the background giving it an old school jungle vibe. Obaa Sima encourages me to get off my lazy ass and make some music of my own.

1752. One of my fifty favorite albums ever, Moorish Music from Mauritania is mind-bogglingly powerful with Dimi’s voice, and has unmatched musicianship with Khalifa on the Oud. Some songs even integrate their daughters into hand-percussion. If it’s not the pinnacle of ethnic music, it’s damn close.

  1936. Osamu Kitajima - Benzaiten
1937. A melting pot of Japanese Folk Music and Psychedelic Rock, very few albums have executed the blend so seamlessly and so powerfully.

  1940. Kolinda - 1514
1941. This Hungarian group integrates entrancing Balkan folk elements into the album that potentiate the experience.

1944. Tomas Korber, eRikm, Toshimaru Nakamura & Otomo Yoshihide - Brackwater
1945. A staggering variety of sounds, from noisy crunches to squeaky pipe sounds. Creative while decidedly dark.
  1946. https://mega.co.nz/#!6VokhZSQ!BwLhvM8wmN5LE859NjxIRfrqJLQu17CYA1XPJMNCC0A
  1947. Kot Kot - ?y??
1948. A unique cassette gem that was only released in a quantity of fifty, Kot Kot has a vibrant sonic blend that is simultaneously stimulating and elating.
  1949. https://mega.co.nz/#!uQpGRTAB!b0Ptp_nhYlu1WM98tn39Lvl504Ww0JDuT0U3dUZ_cxg
  1950. Karin Krog - Joy
1951. Never have I heard vocal jazz get this noisy. Karin’s borderline-demented singing delivers Joy in a way that’s incomparable to any other albums of the kind. Karin’s Mode is a choice selection.

  1962. Piotr Kurek - Edena
1963. The electronics pour in from every angle at this album in a smooth and delightful way. Another truly excellent cassette release. Heavenly music.

  1966. Lasso - Lasso'd
1967. A quirky, lo-fi mixture of Americana and Psych Rock that has an engaging concept of Westerns (as the name/title would denote). A strange find indeed.

1970. Perry Leopold - Experiment in Metaphysics
1971. This album, in my opinion, truly epitomizes the spirit of the Psych-Folk revival in the late 60s and 70s. Perry Leopold sings songs of homelessness, wandering, lost love, all with a stark lyrical contrast and powerful guitar playing.

1974. Liquid Crystal - Chromatic II EP
1975. The best Breakbeat Hardcore EP I’ve heard. Positive NRG bangs hard. Great old-school stuff.

  1977. https://mega.co.nz/#!iNIQhRSD!Ne6plqhsKUNiUOnlLjrXl9njP4Isp3wFB-cJ4mKon9I
1978. Dale Lloyd - Aionios the Fundament
1979. A RYM reviewer described this album as ‘an insect suffocating from claustrophobia in a lightless room’. I think that’s the most accurate one can describe this album.
  1980. https://mega.co.nz/#!yJgQWBAC!Fi0vmiEigiUPAI3s5hXh-whMsnzvtoWtryLAxmCv9xk
  1981. Lofty Pillars - Amsterdam
1982. One of Piero’s favorites of last decade, Amsterdam is a subtly intelligent folk rock album that paces and times itself perfectly. Field of Honour is a favorite.

1985. Loosers - Otha Goat Head
1986. If Jackie-O Motherfucker did a live performance in the Amazon rainforest in the middle of the night, this album would be a better version of that.

  1988. https://mega.co.nz/#!GdYniDrT!Z_KdjeuQtahOcdM5mnsscqX5DxuV8yXXZq5nfAJltsQ
1989. John D. Loudermilk - The Open Mind of John D. Loudermilk
1990. Best described as ‘Acid Country’, this politically-charged record is charismatic and insightful. A little on the blunt side, though, but I personally don’t mind at all.

  1992. https://mega.co.nz/#!fchygKDY!9w8mBHHVoALLJxu1C-LcaBlhgNFV9pL7x3resa1tK8E
1993. Ted Lucas - Ted Lucas
1994. Definitely music for depressed shut-ins, this album of psychedelic folk sounds like it’s bred from pure isolation and regret.

  1996. https://mega.co.nz/#!mZojgQ5D!9N3qrGD_aUj3b-43we2VBihQXgjvGnRfsvgjRVTfyFw
  1997. Julian Lynch - Terra
1998. Julian Lynch’s brand of airy, lo-fi indie folk has stuck with me for years. Definitely a unique presence on the Underwater Peoples circuit.

2004. Macha - See It Another Way
2005. Inspired by Gamelan, Macha’s See It Another Way defines itself as a classic post-rock release. Though many of you may have heard it, I have yet to hear anything else that’s like it.

2008. Kante Manfila - Kankan Blues
2009. One of the Mande guitar greats, Kante Manfila sings very fragile, gentle songs that harmonize perfectly with his innocent voice.

2015. Dumisani Maraire - The African Mbira: Music of the Shona People of Rhodesia
2016. This genre comes from the Shona people of Zimbabwe, using their main instrument, the Mbira. One of my fifty favourite albums of all time, this is a breathtaking example of natural music. I adore the detail and the residual relaxation it imparts. Highly recommended for studying, sleeping, and enjoying in nature. Probably the best release from the essential Nonesuch explorer series.

2019. Marijata - This Is Marijata
2020. One of the very first albums from Africa I ever heard, was only rated ~30 times on RYM upon my first experience. Over the past few years, it’s deservedly accrued a lot of attention for its powerful funky goodness, and its groovy charm. Still among my all-time favorite albums, This is Marijata is an essential listen for anyone interested in Afro-Funk.

2023. John & Beverley Martyn - The Road to Ruin
2024. A wonderful example of British Folk Rock comes from two mainstays in the genre, a husband and wife duo on John and Beverley Martyn. Their love for each other is well-documented throughout this record, and juxtaposed with their eventual divorce some ten years later, is a striking reminder of the fragility of romance, with an eerily preeminent title.

2027. Rob Mazurek Octet - Skull Sessions
2028. One of my personal 2013 favorites, Rob Mazurek plays some of his best work ever on Skull Sessions. Skull Caves of Alderon bangs like very little other Avant-jazz I’ve heard.

2031. Prince Nico Mbarga - Sweet Mother
2032. One of my favorite Highlife releases, Sweet Mother has some graceful and lively moments, especially on the essential Aki Special.

  2034. https://mega.co.nz/#!LdQFRT6Z!349-yudyzDLG0wO-aPv2k70JzqB7uywmNh1kdsaEh8g
2035. MC Money & Gangsta Gold - Da Hard Ov Frayser
2036. One of the thickest releases outta da Frayser, MC Money & Gangsta Gold go hard on this crushing cassette obscurity. Enough cop-hating violence for the whole family!

  2038. https://mega.co.nz/#!7VZD0Jja!1G34zmt5pByXiXEe3KDOcoH58SfJIFO4mXGG37CfC48
  2039. Donald McPherson - Bramble
2040. Donald McPherson proves himself as one of the world’s most brilliant guitarists in this cold, dark collection of abstract string work. Densely emotional and profound in its incomparability, Bramble is the black side of ice.

2043. Blind Willie McTell - Blind Willie McTell 1927-1933 The Early Years
2044. Saying with old-time blues goes: ‘The blinder, the better’. Blind Willie McTell was pretty fucking blind, let me tell ya hwat.

2047. Szilárd Mezei Ensemble - Nád / Reed
2048. This one is an exceptional example of the coagulation of simultaneous deconstructionism and reconstructionism. This album has a ridiculous amount of music per square second, and Hep 2 remains one of my all-time favorite tracks.
  2049. https://mega.co.nz/#!WFAwEQjB!SiNkDDiVB_KtXXAA2YC9uSedIDZRP_a-dgevCM7v6Sc
  2050. MFG - The Prophecy
2051. Very little trance has ever truly interested me, but The Prophecy remains an exception. Probably the best example of the genre I’ve found.

  2053. https://mega.co.nz/#!WNZVnY6K!7yAKmD_7Slor1a1J5uq7UM70sm8XIzrhRAbOLzKi_RM
  2054. Kohsuke Mine - Daguri
2055. Excellent Free Jazz from Japan. Noisy saxophone goodness that can be compared to the more abstract parts of the Soft Machine.
  2056. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VP8AN_logKk [Embed]
  2057. https://mega.co.nz/#!SApVUT4K!WQdvTZnBfhTRLHCoVfawwo8pnYkrlibyYJl9LAhqbE4
2058. Ooleya Mint Amartichitt - Praise Songs
2059. A voice as powerful as her Moorish predecessor in this thread, Dimi Mint Abba. Similar to Moorish Music from Mauritania, and recommended for anyone wishing to look deeper into the genre.
  2060. https://mega.co.nz/#!6IwzhAQb!QRzKPJ0ncKMjOhWIT9XNreHm3Wfimw2WMfahI4lLVGY
2061. Monoshock - Walk to the Fire
2062. My all-time favorite Noise Rock record has an impeccable opening 4 tracks, and many memorable moments after. Makes me nostalgic for speeding down a highway on cocaine during a police chase.

  2064. https://mega.co.nz/#!3ARjXBxJ!BoJTE5wOskbMufRV8N1sjR9seyZTJdwGwhb-qw9Ol2E
2065. Alfredo Costa Monteiro, Ruth Barberán, Ferran Fages, ???? [Masahiko Okura], Masafumi Ezaki & Taku Unami - Atami
2066. Atami is a truly unique release from a collection of highly innovative improvisers, creating sound sculptures unlike anything else I’ve heard.
  2067. https://mega.co.nz/#!LRAnyJ5B!2unOfFSf4y6mtmICFSOE8NnQBR3inzKiFKmcqPFAIcM
  2068. Moss - Sub Templum
2069. This is extremely slow, and extremely heavy doom metal. I’d listen to this record if I was being forcibly dragged to hell.

  2072. RATKING - 700 Fill
2073. >Grimey NYC raps, futuristic beats, very forwarding thinking and refreshing hip hop.

A self-titled album was released by the Transmat label of Derrick May in 1999, followed by two EPs. 2. the stage name used by Canadian singer-songwriter Gordon Peterson. He originally formed a band in his early musical career, but split up the band because he felt as if he had to restrict his music and make it conform to the limits and abilities of those specific band members. He would rather choose his own set of band members for each individual track. His only album, an eponymous released in … read more
