Bossa Nova is a combination of samba rhythms and jazz harmony and it literally means ‘new trend’. Lyrically, the style is often romantic in nature. The role of the bass in Bossa Nova is a supporting one with the bass playing the root and fifth of each chord in a 2-feel style. Notice that bossa nova chord patterns always have the following specifics: The bass notes come on the beat and are played with the thumb. Usually, the root note is alternated with the 5th (or a b5 in the case of m7b5 chords) in the bass.

This is another variation of a funk groove, now with a more eighth note oriented feel which makes it a little lighter. However, the bass and drums still stick together to create a tight sound.

Make sure to listen to the drum part careful when you practice this groove and be aware of how you sound with the track; in other words, always be listening!

This shuffle has a great, straight forward groove somewhere between a walking bass and a funk feel. It’s written in straight eighth notes, but played with a triplet feel.

Rhythmically, the pattern is very clear and your job is to support the band with a steady, solid pattern moving across the changes. Once you feel comfortable with this groove, pick up the tempo on your metronome a bit and see how that feels.
